Rocking in the RSA

Tented accommodation at Rocky Road.
Gero Lilleike

No matter where you are, a unique experience waits to be discovered. With pirate map in hand, GERO LILLEIKE set out to find it.

The road led to me to Nature’s Valley on the Garden Route, and with the sun setting fast, I pressed on through the magnificent Groot River Pass towards The Crags, Plettenberg Bay.

At The Crags I saw a sign: ‘Rocky Road’. Adventure tapped my shoulder leading me left along a long, rocky ‘stofpad’ road.

I arrived, gobsmacked by the beauty of this place. Eureka! Owner, Rocky Reeder, showed me to my tent set in a garden with green pastures, forests and mountains painting a perfect country scene.

You always meet interesting folk at a backpackers and Rocky Road Backpackers is no exception. One of the highlights is the outdoor hot tub. Driven by a wood fire furnace, it’s the best thing for winter.

The Garden Route offers a myriad of adrenalin-charged activities including bungee jumping, skydiving, canopy tours, and extreme hiking.

A surreal hike into the Tsitsikamma forest was tough going but worth every step filled with graceful streams and forests rising to meet the bluest of skies.

At Rocky Road Backpackers accommodation options include fully equipped tents, dorms and double rooms. Bathroom facilities are strategically placed in lush gardens with a distinct natural outdoor feel.
