The Eastern Free State’s 2021 Sandstone Summer and Easter Steam Festivals are on track from February 26 – 28 and April 2 – 5
Sublime vistas of Lesotho’s Maluti Mountains, a vintage steam train, heritage museum, and 36 working oxen are just some of the attractions at Sandstone, just north of Ficksburg.
Savour the romance of vintage transport and the spectacular 30km Narrow-Gauge Steam Railway. Marvel at the pristine collection of old engines, farm equipment, ox wagons, and military vehicles. Where else in the world can you watch 36 Afrikaner trek oxen working in unison? See them in action here.

Facts about Sandstone and 2022 news
- The Sandstone Heritage Trust has the largest collection of 2ft narrow gauge locomotives in the world and has been operational for 20 years.
- In order to showcase its exciting line-up of 2ft narrow gauge locomotives, a special event will be held at Sandstone Estates in April 2022. It will be a world record attempt where no fewer than six narrow gauge Garratt locomotives will work together to try break the world record.
The locomotives to be used are, NGG11 number 52, built in 1919, NGG13 number 49 built in 1928, NGG16 number 88 built in 1936. NGG16 number 113 built in 1939, NGG16 number 153 built in 1968, and the NGG16A number 155 built in 1968.
